The Tucson Symphony Orchestra’s Young Composers Project

Scott Brittenham leads Clean Energy Capital, LLC, as the Tucson, Arizona, investment firm’s president and chief executive officer. Outside of his professional activities, Scott Brittenham supports several local organizations, including the Tucson Symphony Orchestra (TSO).

In addition to holding regular performances, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra operates a number of educational programs for students and the general public. For the last two decades, the organization has offered its Young Composers Project program to elementary through high school students who have an interest in learning to compose music.

Participants in the annual program, which is held from September to May, meet twice per month with contemporary composers, orchestral musicians, conductors, and other professionals who help them explore the composition process. The program ends in May with a public reading session, where the participants’ pieces are performed by either the Tucson Symphony Orchestra or the TSO Quintet. Since it was launched in 1993, the Young Composers Project has helped produce over 300 new pieces written by young composers.
